Allowing some small ferns to become companion plants are nice, especially Maidenhar Ferns (Adiantum sp.) or perhaps some spleenworts (Asplenium sp.), some even having a metallic color to them, or even some Ophioglossum or Belvisia sp. (the lace or strap ferns, most of which are tropical, some growing with Platycerium sp., the mighty staghorns, my fav's!), but if you get one of the many varieties of a "Boston fern", (or any number of invasive Polypodium sp.), or a Dryopteris sp., and in Hawaii, several tree ferns, you will soon find that it's just easier to pull out the Nepenthes than it is to pull out the weed. It turns out that perfect Nepenthes conditions are also perfect fern conditions. Many of these plants have extensive root systems with runners going all over the pot. Several flowering plants have exploding seed pods (Oxalis and Impatiens) and will suddenly show up in many of your pots several feet away from infested plants. - Rich

Here is a picture of a seed tray overgrown with "companion plants". I took this picture and together with a shareware program (Puzzle Creator) turned it into a nice jigsaw puzzle that took me about 5 hr. to complete.
