Oh dear, I knew that was going to happen...Tom, please, tell me that the location near Trat where you found N. kampotiana is not the one at 60 km from Trat, behind the big grassy field where cows are feeding. That's a very "dangerous location", where kampotiana grows side by side with mirabilis. The plant in the first picture is clarly mirabilis or, at this point, mirabilis x kampotiana. The plant in the second picture is kampotiana, but if it comes from that same location, we still have the risk of an introgression. This year I went there with MacPherson, and unfortunately, despite my recommendations, Stewy insisted in collecting some seeds, that he sent to a friend in England. Now hundreds of useless seedlings of kampotiana x mirabilis are going to bring even more mess to this messy situation, many of them probably ending up in collections as pure kampotiana. Tom, I really hope your label is just wrong and that's a plain mirabilis from somewhere else...

The seed was sent to me so I don't know where near Trat it came from exactly. I was skeptical of the seed grown plant with the fimbrate leaf edges. It'll save me the time in making the cross and I'll also be able to compare it with product from IVM nurseries. The other plants from root divisions had no cattle nearby. Sorry.

Nothing to be sorry about, on the contrary!
Then for sure the plant in the second picture is pure kampotiana, while the first could be pure mirabilis (they grow near Trat, with or without kampotiana around) or the hybrid kampotiana x mirabilis...The mistake was made by the person who sent you the seeds, no problem...But I hope this makes people aware of the fact that both the pure kampotiana and a hybrid are going around in cultivation, so be careful!

Here is a photo of the root from my N. kampotiana. Does not look like the root stock of N. smilesii which has several divisions and is light brown in color. It reminds me of a Cephalotus root...
