N. ventricosa Blanco (1837)

Description: in brackets from A. Marshall
Stems:climbing; cylindrical, (to elliptical 7 1/2 mm thick, rosettes present).
Leaves: sessile, amplexicaul, (decurrent to next internode); lamina linear-lanceolate, (10 cm x 2 1/2 cm to 18 1/2 cm x 2 1/5 cm), apex obtuse to contracted; longitudinal veins (obscure, 2 - 4), 5 - 6 located in the outer half of the lamina, (pennate nerves absent).
Lower Pitchers:ventricose in the lower part, strongly contracted in the middle, then infundibulate, the mouth as wide as the ventricose part (4 1/2 cm x 1 1/2 cm - 6 cm x 2 cm) ; 2 prominent ribs present; mouth transverse; peristome cylindrical, expanded; lid ovate,(glandular, with no appendages), apex obtuse, (base slightly cordate, sometimes emarginate), lid slightly keeled, with 3-4 veins; (spur simple or branched to 3 mm long).
Upper Pitchers: ventricose in the lower part, strongly contracted in the middle, then infundibulate, the mouth as wide as the ventricose part, (6 cm x 2 cm); 2 prominent ribs present; mouth transverse; peristome cylindrical, expanded; lid ovate, apex obtuse, base attenuate, lid slightly keeled, (glandular with no appendages), with 3-4 veins, (spur simple).
Inflorescence: a raceme.
Indumentum: scarce, reddish, minute, present on traps and tendrils only.
Color: pitchers reddish green, peristome red, extremely variable, tendril usually always red.
Distinguishing Features: 3-4 veins on lid, mouth transverse.
